If you haven’t realised, the world has been transformed drastically by Covid-19. According to health experts, the way we work, socialize and live our lives will forever (or at least in the long run) be fundamentally different. This is what everyone calls as - The New Normal.
With WFH being part of the new normal, the boundary between the personal sanctuary of our homes and stressful workstation is increasingly being blurred. The ability of leaving all our work at our workplace, and truly giving ourselves a break once we’re at home is slowly diminishing. It’s only a matter of time until we don’t “feel at home” at our home.
But don’t fret! Here’s 3 proven & simple tips that you can incorporate into your daily WFH workday to make it more bearable and (hopefully) enjoyable.
#1 Wake up fresh & don’t rush your mornings
Waking up at 8:55am for a 9am con-call? We’ve all been there, done that. The way you start your day will indirectly affect how your day unfolds. That said, snoozing until the very last minute before you absolutely must get up isn’t exactly the ideal way to set-up yourself up to face the day.
It’s the simplest but seemingly the hardest. Just try waking up earlier and at a fixed timing, at least an hour before your work hour commences. By allowing yourself some extra time to wake up stress-free, wash-up, make yourself a hot drink and eat some breakfast, you will immediately notice the improved quality of your day. Giving yourself some headspace before starting work will prime yourself to tackle your workday more productively.
#2 Plan your day and stick to it
If you don’t plan, you plan to fail (or to be in a mess). Solely planning your work tasks on hand is not enough. Due to the intertwined setting of our workspace with our personal space, it’s crucial that we have our entire day (roughly) planned.
Here’s a few quick tips to plan your day:
Have a daily “To-do Work List”. Besides boosting your work execution efficiency, it also helps with prioritizing the work you need to get done today, while aiding you to plan the rest of your day.
Set a cut-off time off working. While referring to your daily work to-do list, set a reasonable cut-off time (including OT if needed) on when you will completely stop working for the day. Regardless how many pending work there is, stick to it (work tasks are usually never-ending anyway).
Plan your personal time. If you plan your lunch hour to be 1pm - 2pm, then ensure that you avoid work as much as possible for that hour. And once the work cut-off time is passed, go-on and do whatever your heart desires. Whether it’s just lying on your bed doing nothing, watching Netflix or browsing social media, just do it. Truly own & enjoy your personal time.
#3 Have a good night’s rest!
Yes it’s very tempting to indulge in a binge-watching Netflix session after a busy day at work. However, excessive leisure-time-indulging to the extent of it shortening your sleep time is a bad idea. Your sleeping hours are equally important as with your leisure time.
Not only does sleeping late affect the probability of you waking up early & on-time (yes we all know ), but it also affects your mood during the day. Studies have consistently confirmed that even slight sleep deprivation affects our mood and mental health adversely, leading to lower happiness & productivity levels. Thus, getting in at least 7 - 9 hours of quality sleep is crucial for making WFH an easier daily affair.
To have a good night’s sleep, try to:
Stick to a consistent sleep schedule
Wind down your mind
Avoid using any devices before bedtime
Ensure your mattress and pillows are comfortable
The bottom line is, take good care of yourself via the little details. To tackle each day with the intensity of a reckless bull is a burnout time bomb, and soon enough, you will be depleted of energy for the things that really matter.
Learn to slow down, wind down, reflect, reload, and hustle again. This is the daily life cycle that people tend to neglect & should be focusing more on. Live life like it's a marathon, not a 100m sprint race.
Sitting down to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, watching your favourite movies after dinner, or reading a book at night before bed; these are the little self-care moments meant solely for you and will bear long term benefits in every area in life when the time comes. Never forget to live a life, amidst the hustle and bustle!
